• Learning Badges: Many of us have had badges, wear badges and maybe still use badges, they often let people know which music we like, which sport teams we support, what political issues we feel passionate about and of course remind people that it is our birthday (and sometimes what age we are). These badges communicate a message to others about us and it is the same for badges gained in recognition for achievement and for a measurement of ability or skill.

Scouts and Guides have used badges for this purpose for many years and they have also been used in sport to show how far you can run or swim, the games you have played in and the games you have won.

A “digital badge” is an online record of achievements and learning, tracking the recipient’s communities of interaction that issued the badge and the work completed to get it. These digital badges like the physical badges that we all know, are more and more being used to recognise learning and being used to stimulate goal setting, motivating and learning and achievement and celebrating attainment and successes.
